Pup walks and 2 strength workouts

Monday
Did: 2 mi @ 9:41/mi + 1 mi pup walk
I need to figure out a better Monday routine. Attempted a strength routine and did 2 minutes before I gave up amidst puppy being all up in my face and thinking I was playing with her while doing russian twists. Maybe Monday is a bike day. idk.

Tuesday
Did: 6.65 mi @ 8:08/mi avg Track Tuesday
Got out on the downtown track this morning and did 3x1 mi + 400m finisher. Was a little sluggish on the first mile, but picked it up after that and felt strong at the end! 7:08, 6:55, 6:50 then did a 93 second 400m. That's probably 10 seconds slower than when I was doing them regularly a couple of summers ago, so I've got to start adding those back in and see what I can do!

Wednesday
Did: 1.5 mi @ 9:33/mi + 1 mi pup walk + 40 min strength workout
Got in a quick early neighborhood loop plus puppy walk midday, then actually did a solid strength workout in the basement at home. Felt great!

Thursday
Did: 6.78 mi @ 8:50/mi avg
Ran a double loop of the 5k course at work during lunch. Always a good reminder how lucky I am to have that trail so accessible when I'm in the office! Really nice overcast day.

Friday
Did: 1.5 mi @ 9:16/mi + 30 min work gym
Wheeeee two strength workouts in one week! Felt great to get in the gym for a second time, although my arms were still sore from Wednesday's workout. πŸ’ͺ

Saturday
Did: 4.9 mi @ 10:03/mi avg + 2.36 mi walk
Well, this didn't go as planned. Felt proud of myself getting out early to run an out-and-back to TR, but halfway on the return stretch I developed a side stitch that wouldn't go away and got worse every time I started running. Tried to run/walk interval but it still wouldn't subside, so I ended up stopping the run and walking home the rest of the way. Beautiful morning but sadly the body wouldn't cooperate!

Sunday
Did: 1.4 mi hike + 3.2 mi @ 8:45/mi run + 60 min Hot Vinyasa @ SoulYoga
Wheeeee Sunday Funday (exercise style, not drinking style). Started out in the morning with a short hike with D & pup at Bunched Arrowhead Preserve north of TR.

Later afternoon I got out for a few miles on the swamp rabbit trail before hot yoga class at Soul Yoga. I've missed this and mannnn I can tell I haven't been in a while! Hoping to get back into the yoga habit more this summer, although I'll admit the hot yoga classes are a lot less appealing in the warmer seasons. Still, I know it's a good practice!

Busy week

Scott out of the country Mon-Fri means an oddball schedule for the week, but making the best of it!

Monday
Did: 1 mi run + 1 mi walk
I intended to do some at-home strength workouts but just never got around to it, and it was hot by the time I went running (also due to poor planning and motivation). Sheesh. Not a great start to the week!

Tuesday
Did: 7.2 mi @ 8:23/mi avg
Got to run with the RJ Rockers run club after work for a change of pace! Storms stayed far enough away and it was fun to run in a new place with some new folks.

Wednesday
Did: 1.7 mi @ 9:30 avg + 1 mi pup walk
A quick out and back in the morning with an unexpected meeting with a stray dog that made me quite nervous. Was able to shoo him away but he was quite interested in following me for a while. πŸ˜–

Cute pup walk pics at Furman. :)

Thursday
Did: 5.04 mi @ 8:16/mi avg
Ran midday through USC Upstate and felt really good about this pace, which was surprising given the heat and hills!

Friday
Did: 1 mi pup walk + 2.2 mi @ 8:51/mi
Not a lot of spare time today, had to get in a few short things when I could!

Saturday
Did: 4.7 mi @ 8:20/mi avg + 3.14 mi @ 7:15/mi avg ZF Get in Gear 5k
Got in some early miles on the trail before heading down to the ZF Get in Gear 5k corporate shield race. The 5k course was a lollipop loop with the first and last miles being on paved slightly-rolling road and the middle mile being a combination of road, gravel, and dirt/grass. I felt really strong through the whole race and happy with my performance - good enough for 4th overall female and 1st age group placement!

Sunday
Did: 1 mi pup walk + 3.2 mi trail run at Paris Mtn
Took the pup for a neighborhood loop before church in the morning. In the later afternoon I went for an easy trail run at Paris Mtn. I'd wanted to go a good bit farther, but my calves were shockingly sore from yesterday's race efforts! Decided to cut it shorter than planned and enjoyed some quiet reading time in my camp chair by the river.

Runs and walks and trails

Monday
Did: 3.04 mi walk + 1.87 mi @ 8:35/mi

Tuesday
Did: 7.27 @ 7:52/mi avg Track Tuesday
Hit the track and felt super great, did 5x1000m + Hot 400 finisher. 4:17-4:24 for each 1000m plus 86 seconds for the 400. Definitely not as fast as I used to be but man it feels so good to run fast!

Wednesday
Did: 2.6 mi @ 9:01/mi + 1.8 mi pup walk
Awesome morning... got myself up and out the door to get early miles so I was able to enjoy the time with the pup after dropping of D at school.

Thursday
Did: 5.78 mi @ 8:03/mi avg
Got out early for a speedy run! Opted not to run up the mountain today but still managed a pretty hilly course through TR.

Friday
Did: 30 min strength + 3.2 mi cross-country run
Got in the gym at work then hit the trails for a run. Feels good to be back lifting, even if just a little bit each week!

Saturday
Did: 1.4 mi trail walk + 3 mi @ 8:47/mi run
Took D and the pup out to Conestee for some outdoor time and walked one of the nature trails while we were there. Ivy loves trails! Hoping she'll grow into an awesome trail dog. :)
Once we got home, I went out for a few miles around the neighborhood. Definitely got warm in the afternoon!

Tired out pup
Sunday
Did: 5.08 mi @ 8:47/mi avg + 1.4 mi walk
Ran from the Swamp Rabbit grocery while D rode his bike with me this morning. Turned out to be a fun morning! Went for a walk in the neighborhood with Ivy after lunch and tired her out. It's getting warm in the afternoons!

Close to 29 miles running and almost 8 miles walking for the week... not bad!
Loving #dogmom life so far πŸ₯°

Lots of Dog Walks :)

New pup = taking lots more dog walks! :)

Monday
Did: 1.32mi @ 9:06/mi + 0.83 mi walk + 6 mi mountain bike ride
Just enough run for the streak followed by a walk with the pup.
In the late afternoon, got to ride bikes in the woods with Scott! It's been quite a while since we got to ride together, so this was a fun opportunity to ride new trails.

Tuesday
Did: Track #10kTuesday 6.23 mi @ 8:02/mi avg
Downtown track morning, felt really great considering I'm only a week out from marathon! Did 7x600 repeats, all in the range of 2:24-2:30 per repeat.

Wednesday
Did: 3.02 mi pup walk + 2.64 mi @ 8:46/mi avg
Morning walk with the pup after dropping off D at school then a neighborhood run later in the day.

Thursday
Did: 4.11 mi @ 8:53/mi avg
Early miles on the swamp rabbit in some drizzly conditions.

Friday
Did: 1.9 mi treadmill run + 20 min strength training
Back in the gym for some strength and got some miles done too!

Saturday
Did: 10.15 mi @ 9:09/mi Sidewall to Sidewall Fun Run + 1.1 mi pup walk
Signed up for this "fun run" after seeing it for several years and wishing I could join... finally in town for the weekend of the event, and it was a beautiful sunny spring morning! The run goes from Sidewall Pizza in downtown Greenville, up the Swamp Rabbit all the way to Sidewall Pizza in Travelers Rest... a total of just about 10 miles, almost entirely on the Swamp Rabbit. It was a great run and got to meet some cool new peeps!
Earned the beer and a t-shirt!

Sunday
Did: 2 mi @ 9:09/mi avg + 17.84 mi @ 11.3 mph bike ride
A couple of morning miles in the neighborhood while it was still raining, then got out on the road bike in the afternoon once the sun came out! Took a family ride on the swamp rabbit and stopped for ice cream :)

Boston Recovery Week

Recovery week after Boston Marathon

Monday

Tuesday
Did: 1.1 mi @ 12:56/mi, #10kTuesday, steps-only option
This was more of a hobble than a run, but I did it to keep the run streak. I had ideas that I might actually run a 10k today but nooooope. That was not happening. Ran the 1 mile to see the finish line on Boylston one more time before leaving town. I passed another guy on the sidewalk who also appeared to be hobbling along and he commented "this hurts worse than yesterday". LOL yep.

Stopped to see the memorial for the Boston Bombing

Finish Line disassembly in progress

Wednesday
Did: 2.05 mi @ 10:21/mi avg
Back home, ran on the swamp rabbit after dropping D off at school. Just a couple of easy miles, and legs are definitely still sore but felt better after I got moving.

Thursday
Did: 3.1 mi @ 9:55/mi avg
Ran around Furman for a short early morning run. This 1-2-3 recovery plan seems to be working well because leg soreness is significantly diminished today vs. the previous 2 days. Hooray!

Another exciting thing... as of this evening, we have a new family member. πŸ₯°

Friday
Did: 4.39 mi @ 9:13/mi avg
Ran the cross-country trails at work and I'd say the legs feel almost normal! Looking forward to more time on trails in the spring and summertime.

Saturday
Did: 6.02 mi @ 9:40/mi avg
Kept the "long run" fairly short today so as not to derail recovery, but felt good running early miles.

Sunday
Did: 1.82 mi @ 9:57/mi avg + 2 mi pup walk
Short easy miles in the morning before the day gets started. Later in the morning took the pup (and kid) for a walk in the neighborhood.

Overall a successful and good recovery, and exciting week in general!

Race Report: The 127th Running of the Boston Marathon

[Written a couple weeks later and back-dated]

It's a dream come true that I can say "I ran the Boston Marathon." πŸ’™πŸ’›πŸ¦„πŸ€©

Pre-race days
Scott and I flew out of Greenville early Saturday morning to head up to Boston. Other than arriving early and sitting on the tarmac for about an hour, flights were uneventful.

Arrived around lunchtime and first order of business was to get over to Sam Adams brewing for some food and to get the special marathon pint glass they were giving away. We rented some of the city bikes ("Blue Bikes") and pedaled the ~3 miles over on a lovely sunny afternoon.

Successfully obtained the commemorative pint glass as well as the tasty 26.2 Brew, a golden ale brewed especially for marathon weekend.

Also did the nails for the occasion :)

We stopped at Swamp Turtle Brewing "on the way" to head to the race expo, then finally made our way to the convention center. We went through the lines (and lines and lines) up and down escalators, in and out of hallways and doors, before finally making it to the packet pickup areas and then into the expo area.

I made my way over to the official race swag area only to discover that they were sold out of my size in the coveted official windbreaker jacket! 😭 I was also overwhelmed by the sheer number of PEOPLE in that room all scrambling and trying on things and I realized I needed to get out and get somewhere quiet. We stopped for food on the ~1 mi walk back to the hotel (we had a different hotel for Saturday night vs. rest of the trip) and then I decided I was done for the evening.

The next morning (Sunday), after a good night's rest and hotel breakfast, we walked over to meet a group for a 3-mile shakeout run. One of Scott's friends from his graduate research advisor's group was also running, so she suggested this group and we met up for a lovely easy jog through the Boston Commons.

Afterwards we headed back over to the expo where I was able to more calmly make some swag purchases, including a (too-large) jacket. Better than none! :)

Next on the agenda was the Marathon Sunday service at Old South Church, located on Boylston Street right near the finish line. It was such an amazing service - bagpipes and drums and such inspiring messages.

The rest of the afternoon included lunch, a beer at the Cheers pub, a walk through Boston Commons to see the Make Way for Ducklings statue dressed in running gear, and then seeing my BFF Amanda who came over from NY! We got to spend the afternoon catching up then went to dinner.

Monday, April 17th - Race Day!!

Bus loading time for me was scheduled for 8:15am with a 10:50am start time... which meant a very odd schedule for a race day! Woke up a bit before my 6am alarm and went for hotel breakfast around 6:45, in no hurry. I was a little concerned about the balance between eating a normal enough amount of food to keep me going through the day, but not so much that would be problematic while running given that I'm used to doing long runs on a mostly-empty stomach.

After breakfast and checking 10000x to make sure I had everything, Scott and I walked out to the bus loading area at the Boston Commons, about 3/4 mi from the hotel. I'd decided to not use the finish line bag drop because Scott was going to meet me at the finish anyway and would have whatever I needed there vs. me having to fight the crowds to go find my bag.

The buses were lined up for the entire block, and crowds of athletes were making their way through the security checkpoint and into the grouped lines for the buses bound for Hopkinton.

I waited for maybe 20 minutes to get on the bus, then we began the ~45 min drive out to Hopkinton around 8:45am. As we drove, I ate a second small breakfast, texted with some friends who were awake and already cheering me on, and listened to the excited chatter of other runners around me. As we pulled into Athlete's Village, it started raining a bit harder (had only been a sprinkle up to this point, with temps in the upper 40s). We unloaded from the buses and everyone made their way to the tents and port-a-potty lines.

The rain was coming down pretty hard during the wait in Athlete's Village, but thankfully there was enough room underneath the big tents to stay dry while I got all my gear, fuel, and clothing situated for the start. I debated on which layers to wear for the start, what to shed when. etc. Started off with tank top + arm warmers, windbreaker over it, and "throw-away" sweatshirt on top just for added warmth while I wasn't moving around much. On top had the space blanket that worked for warmth and to keep dry!

It wasn't long before I realized it was time to start making the walk towards the start line (another 3/4 mile walk from Athlete's Village) so I gathered my things and headed out with everyone else huddled under space blankets, ponchos, and trash bags.

On the walk to the start corrals, you could feel the excitement building... everyone eager to get their race started, and even some spectators out in the yards of the houses lining the street on the way there. The crowd of runners got very clumped up as we arrived on the street with the start corrals... and I realized I had only a few minutes to make my way from Corral 8 all the way up to Corral 3 where I was supposed to start! Whoops! Ended up jogging a bit to get there right in time to shed my throw-away layers and then off we went!

I only kept my windbreaker on for the first mile or two, then ran with it tied around my waist the rest of the race. The tank + arm warmers ended up being the perfect combination, and I was on the cool side of comfortable for the entire race, even during the downpours in the middle!

The energy and excitement of the start was just incredible... everybody whooping and cheering as we crossed the official start timing mat with the feeling of "omg we're ACTUALLY running it now!"

The first miles of the race passed pretty quickly... I tried hard to control my pace and save some energy for later but it was so hard with the excitement + downhill trend of the course. Spectators were everywhere, cheering and yelling for us, and I couldn't stop smiling the whole time!

The first half of the race was a bit of a blur - just soaking in everything, smiling at the whole experience and atmosphere, trying to see everything along the way. Each time we'd enter a new town, and I would see the flags marking the way, it would give me a little jolt of excitement. Another milestone down!

✅ Hopkinton
✅ Ashland
✅ Framingham

I saw Scott around mile 7ish, in Framingham. He apparently saw me a couple more times, but this is the only one where I spotted him! Clearly I was excited!!

There were photographers at lots of places along the way, and timing mats with overhead cameras at (I think) 20K and 30K, if not more.

Maybe this was 15K just before Natick?

Yes I think so.

✅ Natick

Just past the halfway point, we approached Wellesley College where there is probably the absolute loudest cheering section of the entire race. The girls from the college come out in droves, and I could hear the roar from at least a quarter mile away.

The tradition is that you're supposed to kiss the Wellesley girls as you run past... I opted for lots of high fives and fed off of the energy of their incredible cheers. My pace definitely picked up (also it was downhill) and the photos through here don't even look like I'm running!

✅ Wellesley

Passing the 25K mark is about where it REALLY started to rain hard. I was absolutely soaked, and even had to run while wiping rain from my eyes to see where I was going. It was fairly cold rain, but thankfully not cold enough to warrant fussing with getting my jacket from around my waist. It was also a pretty good distraction during the notorious Newton Hills, including Heartbreak Hill right around mile 20. Boston college was also here, where I missed out on another of the traditions of chugging a beer with the frats. 🍺

Giving serious side-eye to this very happy chick πŸ˜‚

Heartbreak hill, in my opinion, really wasn't all that bad. It wasn't steep at all, but I definitely felt it. And it clearly helped slam me right into "the wall" because my pace never went below an 8:30/mi for the rest of the race (except the final ~1/4 mi sprint).

✅ Newton

I was definitely hurting and ready to be done by the final 4 miles. I remember seeing the Citgo sign in the distance and having to catch my breath for being so excited I was NEARLY DONE!

Great photo in the background of this dude.

...and another.

Some of these might be out of order, because the timestamps on them aren't accurate...

✅ Brookline
✅ Boston

...and finally, there it was... the familiar stretch that I had seen and actually run before on a visit 2 summers ago. Running down Commonwealth Avenue, down through the tunnel, then up for the right on Hereford, and left on Boylston St. Making this turn was probably the most memorable part... the OMG I'M REALLY DOING IT part, even moreso than the finish line... by then everything was a blur, trying to keep my breathing under control so I wouldn't just absolutely lose it.

Left on Boylston!!

Yes, the stretch down Boylston is LONGGGG but man, by then you almost don't want it to end (but ok really you do). For me, I guessed I'd run about a 3:45... and I ended up with an official time of 3:45:01. How's that for knowing yourself? I leave you with the photos of the finish line approach...

There really aren't words... I laughed, I smiled, I cried, I ran.

I RAN.

I ran Boston. πŸ’›πŸ’™πŸ¦„
