Race Report: Sadlers Creek Stumble 36-hour Ultra

Well, I can say being overly ambitious was not a great idea for this event. Compared to last year I was much slower and felt a lot more destroyed at the end of this year's event. That being said, I also was less trained this year and not even sure I could achieve the 100k distance again so I'm not beating myself up over it! Plus due to small course changes, the overall distance was about 2 miles longer (~1/4 mi per lap) than last year so I was able to get a personal distance PR for a single event!

Lots of lessons learned, lots of things to improve, but overall another great time by Lake Hartwell for about 30 hours and of course fantastic times with ultrarunning friends. 😁

Some comparison charts from Garmin below... left side is this year, right side is last year.
Interesting that the start temp was exactly the same, but I'm pretty sure it didn't get into the mid-80s last year. That heat was really a killer during the afternoon on Saturday and drastically impacted the pace.

More moving/elapsed time this year, but the added distance looks like it increased elevation gain overall too.

More running last year = slightly higher HR data overall.

Lap splits comparison. Had a good number of powerwalk laps this year which shows... a lot more in the ~17-min pace range vs. last year was definitely either a run lap or a walk lap. Not so sure the power walk helped this year, but was an interesting experiment. And again... the impact of the heat after the first 3 laps was evident this year.

Heading towards spooky szn

Monday
1.1 mi pup walk
In between innings at D's baseball game.... and a comet sighting when we got home!

Tuesday
6.6 mi @ 8:46/mi avg
Did a solo run at Furman with some speedwork incorporated. 3x 1 mi tempo / 3:00 rest.
Miles were 7:46, 7:40, 7:44 - all a little faster than the intended 8:00/mi pace but very happy with them, plus felt great and could have done more!

1.3 mi pup walk
Walking for warmth during baseball practice.

Wednesday
2.2 mi pup run
I think Ivy just likes cooler temps... was in the 40s this morning and she quite happily trotted next to me for a little over 2 miles! It's been a while since we've run together, between schedules and sickness and being a little irritated with her stubbornness on some recent runs. This one went really well though!

3.3 mi walk
Walked to/from an appointment at lunch. Breezy and chilly, but at least the sun was shining!

Thursday
4.4 mi ruck
Took a ruck walk at lunch with the Hot Fish Club ruck buddies. 20# in the pack and did the 5k course + some extra in the parking lot. Great time for sunshine and friends!

Friday
20 min strength, 2 mi run
Got to the work gym for a bit of upper body and core strength, then headed out for some sunshine on the perimeter of the XC course.

Saturday
1 mi corn maze walk
Had intended to do more than a walk today, but ended up spending lots of time with the fam at the fall festival & corn maze, so it was alright. :)

Sunday
1 mi pup + kiddo walk
10 mi run
Nice mid-morning walk with the pupper and kid, then towards midday headed out for a run. Wasn't in the greatest head space going into it and motivation was low, but stuck with it and ended up feeling good about finishing the 10 miles. It was pretty slow overall but enjoyed the hills of the Green Valley course and a tour of the halloween decorations in the neighborhoods.

Catching up on September

Well, things (life) got away from me (again). So I'm doing a summary post and then will hopefully get back to it.

Went camping in early September at Warrior Creek Campground in Boomer, NC. Had a few short runs and bike rides but not too much, mostly hanging out.

Ran the Blue Ridge Relay with mostly the same Corvus Rockers team as last year. Ran different legs, all were challenging in their own way. Great time and now the debate - same race again next year, or get the team to consider a different relay??

Official Team photo!

Van #1 at our first break - lunch at a brewery (duh)

Fire station baked potatoes after a hot shower... best ever!

Misty morning miles

Long stretch of highway

Lots of pup walks at baseball.

Jones Gap Trail Half - incredibly difficult but managed first in age group and 4th overall female!
Just under 3.5 hours and 3,400 ft elevation. Also several yellow jacket stings.

Then followed 2+ weeks of illness... started almost immediately after Jones Gap, but it was all upper respiratory chest crap and fever. Tested negative for Covid, saw the NP at work and said it wasn't pneumonia. Had prescription cough medicine and Mucinex for a week to get the junk out, and still just felt completely wiped out for weeks.

I ended my daily run streak at 664 days with my last streak run on 9/18/24. It seemed silly to try to keep pushing for one single sad mile every day when it wasn't serving any purpose other than stubbornness, so I made the decision to end it. It was the right decision and a weight has been mentally lifted since then. I also have taken a LOT of downtime, but still continuing the 10k Tuesday streak and the 10k steps per day streak... just decided I don't HAVE to do it all. I can choose what serves me at any given time.

.... and then there was a hurricane.
Hurricane Helene ripped through Upstate SC and Western NC on the morning of Friday, September 27th. Hundreds of trees in our neighborhood were knocked down, the Reedy River was out of its banks and over the roadway, and we lost electricity for 8 days.

We still don't have internet at home, and there are still trees and debris down everywhere. I've been able to participate in a few workdays to help clear trees off of trails (Swamp Rabbit Trail being one) and it's been great to lend a hand, but there's so much more to do. Western NC had entire towns swept away by flood waters, and there are places still isolated because of roads washed out. It's going to take years to recover some of the trails that I've come to love, and it's heartbreaking to see all the destruction.

On a happy note, I'm finally feeling better again as of this week, and getting back into a routine of sorts although that still feels weird given everything that has happened. "Normal" doesn't feel quite normal yet.
